The Life of a General Manager

Alasdair – General Manager at our Stratford flagship

“I am so proud to be a part of the most exciting fashion brand on the high street and being a General Manager in one of our largest stores in the business is definitely something that gets me out of bed on a morning. My team are amazing and I spend a lot of my time coaching, engaging and inspiring them. As a General Manager, there is nothing better than watching your team develop and grow! Working in a multi-million pound flagship has also really taught me how to spin lots of different plates at the same time. It’s extremely fast paced and the expectations are high but I love the fact we get the freedom to innovate and drive our own business.

I actually started working for Topshop Topman whilst I was at Uni. I never actually planned to go down the retail management path, but soon after I finished my degree, I found myself on the Graduate Scheme. I was lucky enough to complete this in our number 1 global flagship, Oxford Circus. This is when I knew I’d definitely made the right decision. It’s such a great place to work and gave me some great exposure. I secured my first Management role as Deputy Brand Manager and the rest is history!

Topshop Topman really challenges you to take ownership for not only your own business, but also for your own brand of leadership. I’ve been able to work on my own style by utilising all the development tools available to me – which can be anything from tailored development workshops to learning on the job. I love how the business has taken my development seriously and see’s me as an investment in the future of the brand.”
